It is with a deep and profound sadness that the Patrons of Italian Culture announce the passing of ‘long time member’ and promoter of the Italian heritage, Prof. Kiki Sammarcelli on July 2, 2022.
Recognized nationally and internationally as an exhibited painter, costume designer and art director, Prof. Sammarcelli obtained both her BFA and MFA from the acclaimed Otis College of Art and Design where she also taught young aspiring artists for a great many years.
Her many exhibitions included, but were not limited to: the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, the Oakland Art Museum, the Galeria de Arte, Sao Paolo, Brazil and the Antichi Arsenali della Repubblica, Amalfi, Italy. Reviews of her artwork appeared in: Il Mattino, Naples, Italy, and Otis College’s Images & Issues. Many pieces of her art are in the hands of private collectors both here and abroad.
Kiki and her long time partner, Mr. Don Dodd, resided in Malibu, California. where they graciously hosted the Patrons at their ocean view residence for a 2002 Ferragosto event and a wonderful Christmas gala several years later.
Kiki most enjoyed the Patrons annual spring “members only’ tours of the Getty Villa, where she would engage in active discussions with the Getty curator and members alike. Her extensive knowledge of art was clearly noticed during the Pompeii exhibition where the ancient wall painting were on display. It was easy to spot Kiki at these and other Patron events; all you had to do was look for a cloud of wispy red hair and there she would be. Her enthusiasm was contagious and everyone enjoyed being in her company.
The Patrons will soon sponsor a ‘Memorial contribution’ in Kiki’s name to her favorite charity and those members and friends are welcome to contribute to this effort by sending a check payable to the Patrons of Italian Culture, with a memo section note ‘Kiki Sammercelli’ donation.
May her memory be a blessing to all of us who knew and loved her.
